Police: Woman, 20, admitted to drinking before fatal crash

A 20-year-old woman was arrested Sunday morning, April 26, 2015 after authorities say she admitted to drinking before crashing her SUV, killing her male passenger.

Police say Laura Diaz of Dallas was driving a Chevy Tahoe northbound on Interstate 35 after entering at Illinois Avenue around 2:45 a.m.

The SUV’s rear wheels swerved then the right rear tire bumped the guardrail. The SUV then jumped over the guardrail, hit the dirt and vaulted over a high chain-link fence before landing on the right side of the fence, said Dallas County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Raul Reyna.

The passenger, who has not been identified, died after his head struck concrete, Reyna said.

Diaz admitted to drinking and was jailed on a charge of intoxication manslaughter, Reyna said. Blood tests for her are pending. She was not injured in the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
